We need to talk about fracking

Fracking could become a very big issue right on our doorsteps here in Broxtowe, and it's an issue that truly divides Anna Soubry and I. Anna has appeared on our local TV news saying she has "been persuaded it's a good idea". My view is the complete opposite.

Having worked at the Environment Agency for over 20 years, having spent my career working to protect and improve our environment and having a young family who I want to live long and healthy lives in Broxtowe, I don't think fracking is "a good idea". As a carbon technology it will contribute to climate change. I think it will snarl up our roads with heavy construction traffic. It will pose a threat to our water supplies and fracking rigs will irreversibly alter our landscape. I think very few of us would be happy for horizontal wells to be dug underneath our homes.

Shale gas is a fossil fuel that should be left where it is, under the ground, while we focus on sustainable sources of energy, insulating homes and growing our economy with high-skilled engineering jobs in green technologies.
It's yet another issue where Anna Soubry and I are miles apart.
